New horizons
January 11, 2007 at 3:38 pm | In ianhuston.net | No CommentsIt has been a while since this humble blog received any attention, but now the time has come for it to be reborn and focused in a slightly different direction. I want to start blogging about physics news and theoretical happenings in particular, and perhaps relate some of the experiences I am having as a new PhD student.
So return soon for an exciting new start and hopefully a change of scenery too.
[UPDATE] This blog has now been closed and relegated to “Old site” status on ianhuston.net. My new blogging attempt is at http://www.ianhuston.net
so go there for new posts. This archive will remain open for a while at least, and previous links should work (after I added some .htaccess trickery).

Stanislav Petrov
April 16, 2006 at 4:26 pm | In General | No CommentsThe most important person you have never heard of!
This story is quite shocking and shows just how insane the Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) argument is. Stanislav Evgrafovich Petrov was an officer in the front line of Soviet Russia’s nuclear defense strategy. Through his actions we are all still alive. Without his cool head, World War III would have probably started on September 26th 1983. For the whole story, have a look at Cosmic Variance’s Thank Stanislav Petrov Day post.
Quite scary stuff.
